The “cross syndromes” of upper and lower cross are common muscular imbalances between “tonic” and “phasic” muscles identified by neurologist Dr Vladimir Janda in 1979. These imbalances contribute to joint dysfunction and pain.
Tonic muscles are typically postural muscles that engage for long periods with a resistance to fatigue. They’re prone to shortening and tension.
Phasic muscles tend to be powerful movers, being used intermittently (in phases). They’re prone to fatigue and weakness.
In upper cross syndrome we have a cross pattern of short and tight tonic muscles such as the pecs in the front and upper traps in the back, combined with over stretching leading to weakness of muscles such as the lower traps in the back and deep neck flexors in the front.
This upper cross pattern will create an environment in your tissues and structure more conducive to pain and joint dysfunction such as neck and back pain, shoulder injuries and headaches or migraines.
Your acupuncturist’s job is to help restore a healthier body ecosystem. Addressing upper cross and other muscular imbalances can be an important part of that.
